CELEBRATING their 65th wedding anniversary yesterday (Thursday) were Alex and Beryl McEwan, of Grafton Close, in Upton.

Mrs McEwan is from Kinnersley, and her husband is from Glasgow.

The couple met in 1945 at HMS Collingwood, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Fareham, Hampshire, where she was a Wren and he was in the Navy.

They got married in the parish church at Kempsey in 1947 and lived in Coventry for a while, but moved back to the Upton area in 1951.

Mr McEwan spent his career as a production engineer at Dowty in Gloucestershire, and Mrs McEwan worked for the Inland Revenue. “But we tended to keep quiet about that,” she said.

The couple have two sons and a daughter, four grandsons and two greatgranddaughters.

And the secret of a long and happy marriage?

“Patience and a good sense of humour on both sides,” said Mrs McEwan.
