TWENTY members welcomed Michael Bird as their speaker on the work and responsibilities of magistrates.
He began by inviting members to complete a quiz on who are magistrates and what do they do?
Most members floundered and guessed their way through, but then went on to be illuminated by Michael's careful and stimulating account of his experiences as a magistrate over many years.
In groups of three, members were given imaginary case studies and helped to consider the nature of offences, the features of offenders, factors affecting the case and the pattern of sentences appropriate.
The next meeting at the Newtown Road Citadel will be at 2.30pm on October 4 when members will have a sugar craft workshop. New member are always welcome.
