A BAND from Malvern have let their acoustic roots music do their talking after clinching success at a prestigious awards ceremony.
BabaJack took their blues-inspired sound to the British Blues Awards and walked away with one of the top prizes as well as performing a set as part of the Newark Blues Festival in the grounds of Newark Castle on Sunday, September 9.
Lead singer Becky Tate secured the title of instrumentalist of the year for her tireless and energetic playing of cahon, African drum and stomp.
Becky said: “We were just blown away because all the great and the good of the blues scene were there. I just thought there was no way it could be me and when they announced it we had just come off stage.
“I think I said something like ‘this is for the band’. I would like to thank everybody for voting for me because that’s the key part and the local support around here has been huge.”
It was very nearly a double delight for the trio, who are completed by cofounder Trevor Steger and Marc Miletich, as the band came runners up in the best acoustic act category behind the much decorated singer and guitarist Ian Siegal.
Becky added: “For us it was incredible because they all play all over the world and we were by far the underdog. We pipped some really big artists.”
She also said the band were receiving various offers from booking agents as far away as France and Italy.
The band, who released their third studio album Rooster earlier this year, are set to return to their home county for a gig on Friday, October 5 at the Millers Arms in Pershore.
