THE meal out this month was lunch at the Mason’s Arms, Wichenford. It has recently been taken over by new people and they are trying to make the pub work with quiz and folk nights. Members enjoyed a twocourse meal very reasonably prices and they were very friendly.
A few members went to the Twin WI at Dormston for their annual spring fair on Saturday, May 5, and managed to find a few bargains with two members lucky on the raffle.
The speaker for May was Mary Paterson, of the Cobalt unit in Lynton House, Cheltenham. She is a professional fund-raiser and gives talks with slides to groups and was very passionate about her subject.
In 1964 Dr Fred Hanna formed the Cobalt Unit Appeal to buy a scanner for the radiotherapy unit.
It is used mainly for treating cancer but can be used for detecting other bone problems. In addition they have mobile units for MRI scans and breast units, which travel to Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.
They also have a PET CT scanner capable of taking photos in an upright position without need to lie in the MRI scanner, which can be claustrophobic and noisy.
Now they hope to have a Heart Mind and Body scanner. This is the latest piece of equipment and an appeal for £100,000 has been launched and the new unit will be funded jointly, by the Cobalt Unit and the Cheltenham General Hospital.
Members were able to give a contribution from their Penny Pots.
At the moment if treatment is needed you have to go to Cheltenham although Worcester is hoping for a breast unit soon.
The resolution for the WI conference this year was for the Government to provide more midwives and this was carried unanimously.
The Diamond Jubilee Tea will be on June 22 at Jenny’s and at the next meeting on June 13 members are celebrating the jubilee so please bring any memorabilia you may have.
