HAVING lived in Malvern since the 1970s I have often thought it would be nice to have a model boat lake to sail remote-controlled model yachts on.

There may be people out there who know of a suitable place. I’ve thought of the Winter Gardens and Hanley Swan but they are home to many birds and a lot of weeds and grass.

The hidden quarry on the hills is promising but I do think you need all-round access to track the boats.

During the 60s I think there was a boating pond on Malvern Link Common near Perrins House at the top of Cockshot Road.

Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair and leaked inevitably, as I remember seeing piles of bricks and cola cans on the concrete base.

Ideally a pond should be circular and raised slightly to hold a reasonable amount of water to give a good view point.

I remember going to North Hill Quarry and thinking the large car park there would have been ideal for a small landscaped pool for people to see their boats in action.

I do know a lot of model boats are sailed at County Hall in Worcester but it would be nice to think something worthwhile could be done locally.

Especially since there is usually a pool rigged up at the Three Counties show to promote radio-controlled models for the young. Model boating is free to watch and that goes a long way in today’s climate.

Any more ideas on the subject would be most welcome.
