"DR Herbert Wareing, organist of Christ Church, Malvern, has won the first prize of 60 dollars in Class 3 (Characteristic Songs) of the great American and international vocal contest, with his song The Ocean's Pride," reported the Gazette 100 years ago.
"The promoters of the competition, Messrs. Theo Prosser and Co. of Philadelphia, proprietor of The Etude, have written to Dr Wareing: 'We congratulate you in this song, which is one of the best of its type that we have seen'.
"At the Midlands Musical Festival at Birmingham last week, Dr L A Hamand, organist of Malvern Priory Church, gained a prize of £5 5s for composition of a part song. This will be included in next year's syllabus.
"There were 6,500 competitiors in the Competition, which took place in three halls with ten judges."
