POWICK Guild held their April meeting based on Hats with a Story and produced a wide variety of tales and much merriment.
Hats included one revamped for a wedding; one with a host of feathers worn at a Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace; and berets made from velvet material.
There were memories of an ATS cap, childhood headgear, school hats and panamas, a scorched gardening cap used at a garden bonfire and a Union Jack top worn at a jolden jubilee party.
Powick Playing Field Association held its annual meeting last month and the chairman, Nick Sandy, reported on the variety of equipment purchased over the year, including a selection of adventure trail equipment grouped around a wooden play hut.
More than £16,000 was spent provided by grants from Powick Parish Council, the Co-op, Grass Roots and proceeds from the Powick Plod fundraiser.
Last year’s fete raised £1,700 to meet annual maintenance costs.
This year’s fete is on Saturday, June 9 and will have a Jubilee theme including a Civil War re-enactment and a display of classic cars.
New members and extra volunteers are welcome to ensure a successful fete so that the attractive green space can be enjoyed by all at no cost all year round.
Powick Ramblers’ walk last Friday planned to start at Great Witley suffered from heavy rain and was cancelled.
At the Ramblers’ annual meeting held recently, three committee members – Rita de Boer, Isabel Brant and Chris Evans – stood down and they were thanked for their contributions to the committee and in leading walks. Cheryl Robertson was elected. 25 people attended.
Last Friday evening Powick Community Choir celebrated its second anniversary with a concert entitled Something Old, Something New in Powick Parish Hall.
Under the leadership of musical director Tom Wells the choir performed a variety of numbers accompanied on piano by Ruth Melhuish and by 10 members of Powick Strings (violins, viola and cellos) with their leader Richard Lane.
The concert opened with the stirring Rex Tremendae Majestatis from Mozart’s Requiem. Other choir items were Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Mary Did You Know? and Tom’s own music for Psalm 121 I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes To The Hills (known locally as the Malvern Psalm).
Interspersed with the choir numbers were soloists by John Hadley, Sally Kidd, Sam Griffiths and Elaine Mather.
Powick Strings treated the audience to Divertimento in F and Memory by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Livin’ on a Prayer. The concert ended with Bridge over Troubled Water by Paul Simon.
The evening was enjoyed by all who attended. Drinks were served and a raffle held for charity.
The choir will continue to meet for practices on Sunday afternoons (starting on May 13) in Powick Parish Hall to prepare for their next concert with the Malvern Male Voice Choir in the Malvern Priory on Saturday, July 7. For details ring Chairman John Hadley (01905 830126).
