A MALVERN trader will be bringing a touch of Victorian elegance to the town’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Lawrence Harper has been running Harpers Bazaar in Malvern Link for the last 30 years but is also a member of the Fairground Heritage Trust and spends much of his spare time restoring and maintaining historic rides.
He will be lending his treasured 19th-century vintage roundabout to the Jubilee Picnic taking place in Priory Park between 1pm and 5pm on Monday, June 4.
The roundabout, which was built in the 1890s by Thomas Walker of Tewkesbury, had been in storage for 20 years before Mr Harper bought and extensively restored it.
In recent years it has become a popular attraction at school fetes, church events and other public displays.
“I love the look on children’s faces when they enjoy a ride on one of the oldest fairground machines still working,” said Mr Harper.
“The roundabout is one of few which have survived as originally built, with hand operation. Most were converted to steam and many have simply disappeared.”
The picnic is one of several jubilee events in Malvern, with others including the Mayor’s Ball, at the Bank House, in Bransford, on Friday, June 1, and a carnival procession through the town the following day.
