IN the magistrates court 100 years ago, Mr W C Richards of Birmingham was applying for "a cinematograph licence for 12 months, for the Church Institute, Hampden Road", "Supt Sherriff said that he inspected the building on Tuesday and found that every requirement of the Act in connection with picture palaces had been complied with, with one exception, namely, the enclosure containing the apparatus was not outside the auditotium. The bench thought that safety had been assured, and granted the license, with a music license."
Meanwhile, "a very successful dance was held in the Drill Hall on Thursday evening, May 2nd, arranged by the Butterfly Dancing Party, in aid of the widows and orphans of the Titanic crew.
"There were about 160 people present and an enjoyable evening was spent." £10 was raised and sent to the Mayor of Southampton's fund.
