A JOBLESS teen stole precious jewellery from his grandmother after she had shown him kindness by taking him into her home, a court heard.

Edna Crump had opened her Malvern house to Tayler Crump and his girlfriend when he had been told to leave his mother’s home.

But rather than repay her generosity with gratitude, he instead stole two gold rings worth a total of £850 and sold them to an unknown jeweller for just a tenth of their value.

They have not been recovered.

Liam Finch, prosecuting at Worcester Magistrates Court, said one of the rings - a diamond and 18ct gold engagement ring - had been valued at £800 over 20 years ago.

“[Mrs Crump] showed them the kindness of accommodating them and in return [Tayler Crump] has stolen two rings that were probably very dear to her.”

Crump, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft.

The 19-year-old, who was representing himself, said he had recently lost his job and he had been kicked out of his mother’s home on the day of the theft on Saturday, December 3.

He added he had acted in a “stupid” way.

Magistrates ordered Crump to undergo a fast-track report from the Probation Service, which recommended he carry out unpaid work.

Magistrates abided by the recommendation, sentencing Crump to a 12 month community order with a unpaid work requirement of 200 hours.

He was also told to pay £850 compensation to Mrs Crump and £85 court costs.

Chairman of the bench, Derek Styles, said: “You realise this is an appalling offence. This court takes a very dim view of this.”
