RE: “We’ll keep bookshop in our town” (Malvern Gazette, January 6).

Firstly I would like to say it’s nice you have some community sprit but why would you want to open the same type of shop that has had to close due to no local support?

Opening a shop around the corner with less on-road visibility is madness unless you are going to bring more moden ideas to the shop like online ordering and selling kindles etc. If you are going to run this as a business think with your heads and not your hearts, I would suggest.

A local business which has just closed tried to get local people to buy into their new concept due to a down-turn in business and this failed.

If you want to open a book shop try asking the library if you can rent some of the space there: the children’s section, for example, is far too large and this would be a great concept in the right place.

I fear your project may unfortunately be doomed to fail unless you all have a very experienced background in retailing books or you are able to get rent-free or space which is very cheap and no lease hassles.

I would urge you all to think long and hard as you could all end up losing a lot of money because you’re thinking with your hearts and not your heads. Anyway, we wish you good luck with your venture!
