A SCHOOL in Malvern has been recognised for both its leadership and its sporting success.

Staff and children at Somers Park Primary School are celebrating after they received two national awards in quick succession.

The first is the National Leadership Award from the National College for Education, which recognises the sustained leadership the school has to offer in learning standards, music, thinking skills, and also the global curriculum.

Some of their achievements included developing a shared curriculum with a school in Tanzania and America, as well as having three choirs, an orchestra and steel pan band.

Pupils perform regularly in the community, with the most notable outings being at Symphony Hall, in Birmingham and to Cheltenham Town Hall.

They also earned the Olympics 2012 Award in recognition of the school’s outstanding achievement in sport and the strong link it has achieved with the arts on a global scale.

The honour means the school has the concession to use the Olympics logo for its expansive sports and arts project during the summer.

Headteacher Stuart Sewell said: “The double award arriving so close together is exciting validation for the hard work of all teachers and pupils.

“Staff fully deserve the leadership award for all their hard work developing such a creative curriculum.

“Pupils are very excited with the Olympic award, and are working hard developing their personal sporting skills ready for a competitive summer celebrating the Olympics in our country. We are running and jumping with joy.”
