HOW refreshing to have your paper so full of letters and articles reflecting the state of play in Ledbury.

May I first support the letter from Chris Ponter Jnr and his emphasis on the problems facing our young people.

Our town has many people like myself, closer than we would like to be to the end. The past, present and future of our lovely town depended and depends on a flow of young and new people who are, or have been, gainfully employed. This requires the support of traditional industry and the innovation and development of new enterprise.

I have lived here happily for 30 years during which time very, very few High Street or Homend businesses have remained in the same hands. Existing businesses seem now to resist the very changes that gave them their own opportunities.

I share the disappointment of the mayor at the townspeople’s lack of interest in a celebration for the Diamond Jubilee. Those who have concern at the cost of £5,000 should, I feel, reflect on what the cost to taxpayers would be of the election of a president every four years. £5,000 equates to about 50p per person in the town.
