THERE were dramatic scenes in a Powick cul-de-sac on Saturday morning as residents awoke to see flames leaping high above their street.

Fire crews from Worcester were called to Russell Close at 6.45am to a report a two-bay garage was alight.

Station commander Gary Jay said it appeared the fire had been caused by an electrical fault and that the inhabitants of the house had been alerted when their electrics blew.

They were able to get everyone out of the house, move their cars off the driveway to safety and shut the garage doors.

“We were able to bring the fire under control quite quickly, before it got close to spreading to the house,” he said. “The walls of the garage were still intact but the roof was 100 per cent destroyed.”

A neighbour who had woken up to the commotion said he was taken aback by the height of the flames.

“They were really rising up high above the houses,” added station commander Jay.

“It was quite dramatic and there were a few people out in the street watching it unfold.”

No one was hurt in the incident.
