100 YEARS AGO.

Sir Edward Elgar OM has just purchased the fine freehold detached mansion, No 42 Netherall Gardens, Hampstead. The house, designed by Mr Norman Shaw, was for many years held by Mr Edwin Long RA and has a large studio or music room. Its name, formerly Kelston, has been changed to Severn House.

50 YEARS AGO.

Has Malvern enough car parks if it is to cater suitably for visitors? Malvern Council, which recently decided on a plan to earmark part of Back Lane, Great Malvern, for one at an estimated cost of £100,000, again debated the subject last week. Mr G T Baldwin, who was not in favour, admitted there was a necessity for additional parks, but said that didn't mean one had to pay the earth.

Closure of the Hill Junior High School at Upton is a feature of all three options bring put foreword as possibilities in the document reviewing education in the Malvern Hills area. The 350-pupil 11-14 age range school, whose numbers are expected to drop by 1993 to 285, could be merged with Hanley Castle High School in proposals for rationalization to combat falling rolls.
