MUAA members made the eagerly anticipated trip to the River Wye at Bredwardine recently and found the river in very good condition with a good flow and colour in it.
Neil Humpage chose a swim near the top end of the stretch and initially targetted the prolific shoals of dace that the Wye holds.
By heavily feeding maggots and using maggots on the hook under a stick float Neil amassed nearly 20 pounds of dace and bleak, before switching to a block end feeder with pellets to try and tempt the larger chub and barbel that also live there. This switch was to prove decisive as he caught two barbel, biggest weighing 6-5-0 and some chub for a winning weight of 36lb.
In second place was Chris Loveridge who chose a lovely swim noted for Barbel, Chris landed two, the biggest a nice fish of 7-6-0, along with some chub to give him a 25-1-0 net.
This year's Junior cup contest was held on the pool at Mathon. Shane Brookes became champion by netting three nice carp for a weight of 12-0-0, runner-up was James Mitchell with 3-14-0. In third place was Sam Brookes with 2-12-0 The club held a scramble at Holdfast last Sunday and with a low and clear river combined with bright sunshine, returns were poor. John Wagstaff took this one aided by a lovely bream weighing 7-4-0 which boosted his winning weight to 7-14-0.
Second spot went to Dave Green with 2-5-0 and in third was P. Roberts 1-9-0.
