Jack by the Hedge - a lovely country name for a plant that does in fact grow by the side of hedges and along verges. If you like your sandwich fillers with a hint of garlic then this is a plant you must get to know.
It has small white flowers and a leaf that is shaped like the ace of spades. The give away is its smell of garlic when crushed. We pay good money for rocket and other interesting greens so get a guide book out and seek out this useful plant.
IAN ROWAT.
