AT the end of March, Powick Ramblers met at the New Inn, Ombersley Road, in Worcester for a 4 1/2 mile walk which began at Bevere. The path led down to the River Severn and followed the riverbank downstream, past residential houses, to Gheluvelt Park where the War Memorial sculpture was seen. The path then led back to the New Inn where some members took lunch and where Cheryl was thanked for leading the walk.
Last Thursday on what proved the warmest day of the year so far, 19 walkers and four dogs – Pebbles and Widgeon joined Deno and Tilly – met at St Mary’s Church, Bromesberrow for a four ½ mile walk through some stunning countryside. The bright sun had brought out new green leaves on the trees, blossom on hedges and many spring flowers were seen. The walk passed dozens of ewes with their young lambs, a vineyard and a field of horses and fields where early shoots of wheat were growing. The route led to the Bromesberrow Estate with its lakes, woodland and White Park cattle, past Bromesberrow Place to Howlers Heath. At the top of the ridge, along part of the Geo Park Way, there were fine views across to the Malverns, the Eastnor Estate and the obelisk; and in the other direction to the Black Mountains, May Hill and Marcle Ridge; and behind were the Cotswolds. Buzzards were seen and plenty of pheasants were heard and spotted by the dogs! The special feature of the walk was the many wild daffodils in High Wood, and at the edge of the wood a few early bluebells were only just in flower alongside dog’s mercury and wood anemones. The path returned past the newly refurbished War Memorial (erected in 1921) and due to be rededicated in May; past St Mary’s Primary School and back past Bromesberrow Court Farm which is a member of Gloucestershire Farming Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG). Phil was thanked for leading the walk and members retired to the Robin Hood Inn at Castlemorton for lunch.
On Thursday, April 21 the Ramblers walk will start at 10am from Pershore Bridges Car Park (GR953451) for a five mile walk along the River Avon and through Tiiddesley Wood to see the bluebells. The leader is Nancy (01905 620185).
