LAST week we took a different turn; hired a minibus and went down to Dymock to see the daffodils. It was an excellent day out as the coach driver took us all round the lanes of Gloucestershire some of which were well peopled with daffodils and but some were sadly past their best. But it was such a lovely day that the journey out was worth the occasional disappointment of daffodils going over. We then had lunch in the Parish Hall as provided by the Dymock ladies and then hived over to the church and finished off with coffee and cake! Why is it that it is the eating that makes a day out good? Our driver then took us down to the old church, St Mary's. No matter how often I go there always seems to be something new, which considering the church is 1,000 years old is quite impressive. Much restoration work has been done but not so as to spoil the effect of the place, the paintings, that have not been washed away, are quite remarkable.
Next month we will meet again at Christchurch Hall on Wednesday, May 4, come along at 10.30am for coffee and a chat before Iris takes us on another journey back through time entertaining us with some of her tales of Being on the District in the late Fifties Some of her stories will take you back to your youth and make you glad to live in today's hygenic times ... or are they? It will be interesting!
Make an advanced booking in your diary for a pub lunch at The Blue Bell at Barnards Green on Friday, May 20. Lists will be on the table at the next meeting.
And another note for your diary; is the June meeting on the first of the month when Carol from Guarlford Nurseries will be coming along and bringing her knowledge and her beautiful plants. For those who came last year I hope Carol's answers to your flower problems have yielded results ... if the winter did not ruin all your hard work. Her visit will enable you to replace some of the plants that you have lost and hopefully gain some tips to avoid the problems in future.
As a general point we are becoming aware of some folk's need for lifts to get to the club. Do please remember that many of us have cars that may be coming your way and we can always arrange lifts ... you only have to ring up and ask and we will try and arrange it for you, Ring Alan on 01684 575671 or me on 592709 and we will do what we can. That goes for friends or strangers as the strangers will soon become friends, as that is what the club is all about, come along and meet up with us ... we are a friendly lot.
CHRISTINE GLEDHILL.
