CALLOW End Village Hall is the venue for another Shindig event, bringing live acts to village halls. On Saturday, April 9, Hank Wangford and his colleague Brad Breath will entertain with Country and Western song with much humour and touches of gloom and doom. There is even a rope trick and yodelling, plus guitar and banjo accompaniments. Tickets are £10 which will include supper (probably chilli but with a vegetarian alternative). The evening starts at 7.30pm and is entitled No Hall 2 Small. To book tickets ring Val Durnall (01905 830469), Jackie Bell (01905 830061) or Maureen Charles (01905 830487.

The evening recently organised by the Friends of St Peter’s when The Merlins presented their concert made £1,000; of this 25% is going to Troop Aid which supports troops returning from Afghanistan. Thanks to all who supported the fundraising evening.

The coffee morning and sale held last month in St James’ Church for the Barnabas Fund raised £188.10.

New Exercise to Music classes are being held in Powick Parish Hall on Mondays from 8.15pm-9.15pm, on Thursdays from 8pm–9pm, and on Fridays from 1.45pm–2.45pm for beginners. An intermediate class is held at Callow End Village Hall on Tuesdays from 8.30pm–9.30pm. All classes are being run by Elaine Newman (01905 830875) and each session costs £4 (with the first taster lesson being free).

On Sunday, April 10 the Annual Parochial Church Meeting takes place at St James’ Church, Callow End at 10.30am, following the morning service of Holy Communion at 9.30am. The annual meeting will be preceded by the election of Church Wardens and the main meeting will include the Vicar’s report on the year, the Accounts and reports of other church activities which have taken place over the last year. Other members to the PCC will also be elected. There is no 11am service at St Peter’s, Powick (but Holy Communion is at 8am).

On Tuesday, April 12 Powick Ramblers meet at 10am at the Car Park, on the Hanley Road, opposite the bridge at Upton-on-Severn. The four 1/2 mile walk is to Earls Croome and the Upton Marina and will be led by Rosemary (01684 573494).

Powick Ramblers have presented to Powick Parish a map case containing a large map (Scale 1:10000) showing the Rights of Way in Powick and the adjacent parishes. It stands on the pavement by the school entrance near the Parish hall. An identical map has also been placed by the Ramblers in the refurbished map case outside the Pound stores in Callow End. The new map replaces one placed there in 1994 by the Worcestershire County Council.

Powick Ramblers also met last Monday evening for a delicious meal at the Fox and Hounds, Lulsley, when 49 people attended. A number of new leaders of walks had come forward recently but the one person who had led the most walks over the year (12) was Garth Lowe who was thanked and presented with a bottle of wine by Phil Bunyan. The Annual General Meeting of Powick Ramblers takes place on Monday, April 18 at 7.30pm in The Orchard Centre, Colletts Green. All are welcome.

It was with great sadness that parishioners heard of the death of Canon John Williams who was the vicar of St Peter’s, Powick, for 21 years until his retirement in the 1980s. He was also chaplain to the Powick and Callow End Branch of the Royal British Legion. He died last week at the age of ninety years following a fall near his home in Pershore and he leaves behind his widow Kay.
