100 YEARS AGO Members of the Streets Committee are to be commended for their wise and kindly recommendation to the Council that flower sellers to be permitted to pursue their harmless and picturesque trade in Church Street without let or hindrance. It is certain that the casual sale of flowers in the street does not appreciably interfere with the business of nurserymen or shops, insomuch as the women always were able to find safe sanctuary in the entrance to the Priory Churchyard or elsewhere.

50 YEARS AGO Sir Barry Vincent Jackson, founder of the Malvern Fesival in 1929 and one of the most distinguished men of the British theatre, died on Monday. He was 81. It was a walk on the hills with George Bernard Shaw which led him to pioneering drama festivals in this country.

25 YEARS AGO Former Malvern Hills District Council chairman Mr Brian Wilcock has been elected the first chairman of the new Malvern Wells Parish Council, which held its inaugural meeting at the church institute on Friday.

Mr Don Howe was elected Mayor of Ledbury at the first meeting of the newly-formed town council last Thursday. Mr Howe has been involved in the running of the town since he moved to Ledbury in 1963 as a surveyor to the then Ledbury Urban Council.
