"MALVERN is to acquire a boys' day school in January, run by Mr F W Quibell-Smith, who has been for 14 years on the staff of Wells House," reported the Gazette 50 years ago.
"This was the big news given at Hillside School Parents' Day held at the winter gardens last week, by Mrs Dorothy Quibell-Smith, who said the new school would be just three doors away from Hillside at 179 Worcester Road.
" 'We do feel the need for a boys' day school in Malvern,' she said. 'A school where boys from Hillside can go at the age on nine and take their 11-plus, late entry to grammar schools, or common entrance examinations, to continue beyond that.
" 'We have a large building which will take some filling, but judging from the way our present school has filled, we are optimistic.'
"Mrs Quibell-Smith said Hillside at present had 167 pupils in ten forms, and she was very proud that the school was, first and foremost, a real family and a happy one."
