LAST Saturday, there was a string of 500 walkers, many of them local, who took part in the St. Richard’s Hospice Charity walks along the Hills, some passing up above the village of Malvern Wells. Various abilities completed the 2, 5 and 11 mile walks and although the weather was showery this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the walkers who continued regardless.

The following day was the Malvern Lions sponsored walk around the Three Counties Showground which was also well supported and has hopefully raised a lot of money for local charities. Well done to all those Wells residents who talk part in either of these walks.

As part of the Malvern Walking Festival which starts at the end of the month, there is an early morning walk at British Camp and two 1940’s walks around St. Wulstan’s Nature Reserve planned for the Wells area in the first week of June.

Malvern Wells Tea Club had a lovely tea at the home of Mary Ruff and they would like to thank her for her hospitality.

A date for your diary is Thursday, June 18 when the Tea Club has the use of the local mini-bus for their trip to Bromyard. The idea is to have lunch then wander around some beautiful gardens before taking a leisurely ride back to Malvern Wells. If you are interested in booking this trip, please telephone Barbara on (01684) 562904 for further details.

The Manageress of the Daisy chain Benevolent Fund shop in Barnard’s green that raises money for the Midland’s Air Ambulance is thrilled because through this column she has two more volunteers helping out in the shop, one from the Wells and one from the Wyche. She was also well stocked up with donations of items and is hoping that this timely reminder will help them, once again, to replenish their stock.

Malvern Wells Primary School breaks up today (May 22) and will be closed for one week. Today (May 22) is the deadline for nominations for the Good Citizen 2009 Award for youngsters of 18 years or under. If you know someone in the Wells aged 18 or under whom in some way is a good citizen by being courageous, generous or unselfish, West Mercia Police would like to know. You can either download an entry form from russell.barker@westmercia.pnn.police.uk or obtain a form from Malvern Police Station.

Starting yesterday (May 21) and continuing until the end of May, a private caravan club event is being held at the Three Counties Showground. There may be a few more vehicle movements in that area over the weekend but Spring Bank Holiday Monday is the day to avoid the showground unless you are going to an event. On Monday May 25 there are two public events being held at the Showground, a flea fair in the Avon and Wye Halls, with cars being parked in South Car Park and a Toy Collector’s Fair in the Severn Hall with access via the yellow gate.

The first Band In The Park in Priory Park is this Sunday (May 24) with Malvern Hills District Brass Band, including two players from the Wells, playing on their home ground. If you want to hear them, call in at Priory Park at any time between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Sunday, May 24 for this first concert of the season.

On Wednesday, May 27 at 7pm is Malvern Wells Parish Council AGM in Malvern Wells Village Hall. This will be followed by a Parish Council Meeting.

The end of May is the deadline for all items to be included in the summer issue of the Wells News. Please send all items to the editor, Mike. He can be contacted on (01684) 563824.

Wells residents and other volunteers who attend the working parties were faced with a very green St. Wulstan’s Nature Reserve last Sunday. After all the rain, the reserve has taken on an entirely different appearance to a month ago. The next working party is Wednesday, June 3 from 10.30am until 1pm, when the reserve should be very leafy and full of wild flowers, so there is a date for your diary.
