NEWTOWN won the Ron Handy Trophy when they beat local rivals Welland Juniors.
Newtown scored on 16 minutes when Luke Simpson hit a volley from 25 yards into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Welland were slightly the better team in the first-half and put the Newtown defence under pressure. But they found the back four of Ross Mulka, George Theakstone, Shane Abel and Daryl Davies in fine form, backed up by keeper Joe Crews.
In the second-half, the Newtown midfield of Kyle Stimpson, Luke Simpson, Alex Doyle and James Bannister took control of the game and created a number of chances with the strike force of Ashley Hill and Sam Daffin causing the Welland defence all sorts of problems.
Daffin netted Newtown’s second with a shot from 12 yards giving the keeper no chance. Ben Kite, Callum Loader and Ben Jackson all did well when they came off the bench.
Newtown can clinch the league with two points needed from their double header with Worcester Wizards on Sunday. The first match will be played at Sling Lane (ko 2.30pm).
