DIDN'T we do well! When the Jubilee Fountain in Malvern Wells was erected in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, it is doubtful that anyone would have thought that in May 2009 it would be temporarily converted into Charles Darwin’s ship, The Beagle. Congratulations to Lois and Brendan Lawler and Angela Sutton for masterminding this project that deservedly gave them a gold award during the 2009 Well Dressing event.

The Brighter Futures Club which caters for children before and after school took their part in the recent well-dressing festival by decorating the Lyttelton Well in Malvern Town Centre and they were presented with a gold award.

It was party-time for the regular members of the Malvern Wells Tea Club on Wednesday, May 13. There were home-made cakes and games and no doubt everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks go to all those who put in the hard work involved in organising this event. If you have considered joining the tea-club, they generally meet on the first Wednesday each month and are planning a summer outing where they will go off somewhere in a mini-bus. If you are interested in joining this club, please telephone Liz on 01684 310896.

For railway enthusiasts, tomorrow (May 16) promises to be an exciting day with two Castle steam locomotives, Nunney Castle and Earl of Mount Edgcumbe stopping at Hereford at 11am to take on water. They are scheduled to remain at Hereford until 1.30pm before continuing on their journey. They will then take their train on to Birmingham via Worcester Shrub Hill and the estimated time of arrival at Worcester is 5.58pm but the steam engines are not scheduled to stop.

Just a reminder that the new railway timetables come into force on Sunday, May 17. There are only a few minor changes but it is worth checking the times.

Transition Malvern Hills is meeting again on Wednesday, May 20 at 7.30pm. This is an informal meeting being held at the Great Malvern Hotel and organisers have called the event Transition Drinks. You are invited to go along and have a chat. Everyone is welcome. With the news that Malvern might soon be plastic bag free as far as shopping is concerned, it shows that the community living in Malvern is making an overwhelming effort to prepare themselves for the inevitable point when oil no longer flows from the world’s oil wells.

Next Friday, (May 22) is the deadline for nominations for the Good Citizen 2009 Award for youngsters of 18 years or under. In our society that is so quick to condemn youngsters, this award is encouraging people to look at the more positive actions being carried out by our local young people. If you know someone aged 18 or under whom in some way is a good citizen by being courageous, generous or unselfish, West Mercia Police would like to know. You can either download an entry form from russell.barker@westmercia.pnn.police.uk or obtain a form from Malvern Police Station.

On Thursday, May 21, the National Beef Association is holding an event at the Three Counties Showground and from Thursday, May 21 until the end of May, a private caravan club event is being held at the Three Counties Showground. You may occasionally hear gentle drifts of music from that direction if there is an easterly wind or no wind. There will also be caravans arriving and leaving the showground on May 21 and May 31 which may cause minor delays in that area. This is just for information so that you know what is going on at the showground.
