"THIS was a notable week in the 70 years' history of the Malvern Hills Conservators, for not only did the Board move offices to Prior's Croft, Grange Road, but it opened up the first approach top the hills from the town centre, Clare Walk," wrote the Gazette 50 years ago.
"The new approach, which is cut through woodland from the Hill House, Worcester Road, is being named to commemorate the services to the Board of the late deputy clerk, Mr G H Clare.
"With other recently-bought land at Coombe Lodge, above Foley Terrace, it provides a fine woodlands walk.
"There is no other direct way on to the hills from the town centre between Red Lion Bank (to Happy Valley), now declared no through way, and the Tank Clock at North Malvern.
"On Tuesday, a small group of Conservators, led by the Chairman, Mr T Cook, visited Clare Walk, which leads on to the hills via a flight of 50 steps through banks of Malvern stone, with handrails on either side.
"Then, on through a kissing gate, the walk swweeps round at the back of the Hill House through a fine wood carpeted with bluebells. A 15-minute walk leads out by Ivy Scar Rock and the Tank Clock, and provides a short cut for North Malvern residents which is already appreciated."
