LIBRARY Must Remain Independent was the headline in the Gazette 50 years ago.
The story reported that the town's library committee was determined not to let itself be taken over by Worcestershire County Council, a threat that was very much in the offing.
"The question as to whether a borough or urban district council losing its library powers to the County Council will result in it being more economically administered is debatable; the same service is likely to cost the same, and may even be more," read a memorandum written by opponents of the change.
"A library has been built up to satisfy essentially local needs in line with the town's cultural, commercial and industrial characteristics.
"In Malvern, the building and grounds were gifts to the town, and many benefactions and gifts have been received, which were given to the town specifically. It houses the war memorials - the most personal of local features. Most towns possess extensive local collections. The library is thus a reflection of a town's personality and its cultural centre."
