A new initiative to combat loneliness is being launched in Malvern.

Happy to Chat, which was introduced in April with three benches around the town, is now expanding into cafés.

Led by Councillor Julie MacLusky, the initiative aims to improve social connections and interactions.

The success of the benches has prompted the introduction of Happy to Chat tables in four cafés across the town, which will be available on certain days and times from December.

It is part of a wider UK scheme, with one woman from Bradford on Avon stating that the table at her local café "saved her life" after she was suddenly widowed.

Cllr MacLusky said: "We are thrilled to be expanding the Happy to Chat initiative to include a wider audience of Malvern.

"The Happy to Chat tables will provide a space for people to strike up chats in more central locations across the town.

"As a council, it is important that we take the appropriate steps in proactively addressing the epidemic of loneliness, something the Happy to Chat initiative is critical in doing."

The first phase of the pilot will see four cafés participating in the lead-up to Christmas.

These are Faun, Abbey Road Coffee, Book and Cup Café at Malvern Library, and The Cube.

Cafés will have designated Happy to Chat tables where people can go for a cuppa and a chat, although there will be additional charges for beverages.

This is expected to be particularly beneficial during the festive season, which can be a lonely time for some.

All participating premises will advertise when their Happy to Chat tables will be available.

The initiative hopes to reach a wider audience and encourage more people to engage in conversation.
