THOUSANDS of dissatisfied people in Malvern and West Worcestershire have signed a rapidly growing petition calling for another general election.

But although the Conservative MP for the area, Dame Harriett Baldwin, has said the current Government was on the wrong path, she has stopped short of calling for another election so soon after her party's heavy defeat in July.

A petition on the UK government website calling for a general election gained over 2,600,000 signatures within days, including 3,791 from Worcester.

So far, 5,474 people have signed the petition calling for an election, around 5.649 per cent of West Worcestershire.

Labour has been slammed for its recent decisions in the budget, including rises to national insurance and extension of inheritance tax to include farms.

The petition claimed the government has gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election, which saw Labour sweep the Conservatives out of power in a landslide win.

Dame Harriett told the Gazette: “I am aware of an online petition which clearly expresses a lot of dissatisfaction about the current Government.

“Vast swathes of my constituents, from people living and working in the rural economy to business owners have shared their concerns with me about the Budget.

“It is clear to me and many voters that the Government is on the wrong path, and this is not the change that people voted for when they entered the polling booths in July.

“Only a Government can choose to call a General Election but clearly many people feel strongly about this.

"I plan to continue to be a strong voice for West Worcestershire and to speak up for all the things local people care about.”

Tom Collins, Labour MP for neighbouring Worcester, said: "This Labour government inherited a £22 billion black hole in our public finances.

"People are right to expect an apology from the Conservatives for crashing the economy and running our public services into the ground.

"We’re focused on fixing the foundations of the country, investing in our NHS, schools and the public services that we all rely on here in Worcester.

"Our budget’s purpose is to drive growth and investment into the UK by restoring economic stability.

"Rural communities need our public services – whether that’s improvements to our roads, better transport links or access to health services.

"The new budget is delivering these, alongside key investments in British farming."
