FRUSTRATED commuters have called for Malvern's Newlands Recycling Centre to be moved to prevent the traffic 'chaos.'

This comes after Malvern Town Council voted down a motion to begin talks to introduce a booking system at the facility to help calm the long queues which are blighting the area around the tip.

Despite the idea of a booking system piquing people's interest, people have been calling for the recycling centre to be moved to another site as they feel it is 'not fit for purpose.'

Others feel the situation is so grave that, rather than simply relocating the tip, a second site should be opened.

However, Worcestershire County Council have said it would not be in a position to move the site in the near future due to financial pressures.

The idea to move the recycling centre was first mooted by Cllr David Watkins at last week's Malvern Town Council meeting, during which he claimed the current site was far too small.

Readers got in touch with the Gazette to make their views known.

Steve Gregory said the recycling centre was at a poor location with a poor layout, adding the site was no longer big enough to service the expanding local population.

Nathan Mackie added: "If the site is to remain there, then perhaps the road layout needs a rethink.

"The retail park queues cause disruption, and I tend to think even more than the queue for the tip.

"Perhaps instead of relocating, a second site elsewhere should be opened.

"Relocating just moves the traffic problem elsewhere and wouldn't address the increasing number of users."

Andrew Stocker also said the tip needs to be relocated and restrictions should be put on it so only people in Malvern or nearby can use it and not people from elsewhere.

Councillor Emma Stokes, cabinet member for the environment, at Worcestershire County Council said: “The feedback from residents is always important to us and, other than the Town Council notice of motion, we are not aware of any recent issues being raised.

"The Newlands site is one of 11 Household Recycling Centres located across the county which can be visited by any of our residents.

"Finding, securing and relocating a Household Recycling Centre would be a significant and costly activity, and given the current financial pressures we are facing, along with upper tier councils up and down the country, we would not be in a position to consider a move of site in the near future. “
