THE REMARKABLE story of one of the most important figures in the history of Morgan Motor Company has been shared for the first time.

A new book will be launched detailing the life of Derek Day, the long-standing sales director at Morgan who met and did business with royalty as well as icons such as Roy Orbison and Mick Jagger.

'D. Day at the Morgan Motor Company', was only fully written two weeks before Derek died aged 89 in December 2023, just long enough for his wife Pamela to read the chapters to him.

Now his wife hopes this book detailing his incredible life will help his memory live on.

Derek started at Morgan in 1947 as a tea boy but rose to become sales director.

He retired in 1997, and he was often begged to write about his life, but he refused, preferring to take his memories to the grave with him.

However, that all changed two years ago when an article was published about Derek in Mog Magazine, prompting floods of calls asking for him to write his story.

Mrs Day told the Gazette: "We had the most extraordinary life, we travelled all over the world and did the most incredible things, including going to Rome for Frank Sinatra's final concert while sitting with the Roma football team at the time.

"The workers at Morgan were so used to Derek bringing famous people through they wouldn't even look up, the one person who did make them stop was Roy Orbison, it was such an iconic visit.

"Roy Orbison was actually into bikes more than cars but he had a private visit with Derek and he loved it.

"He managed to get a signed photograph of Mick Jagger and sold cars to three foreign Kings, he did travel all across the world on business but mostly these celebrities came to him."

Derek and Mrs Day were married in 1966 and she later became the secretary for the chairman of the motor company, Peter Morgan.

She added: "Derek was a very quiet man, he didn't court publicity and would always be very discrete, but I have never seen anyone command so much respect from people.

"I am so pleased this book was completed because it means Derek's memory will live on."

A special launch date for the book, written by former professional cricketer Andrew Murtagh, will take place on Saturday, November 9 at 10am at the Morgan visitor centre.

All are welcome to the book launch event next weekend, where it is hoped a motorcade featuring many iconic Morgan cars will grace the streets of Malvern.
