A BURST water pipe meant that some homes in the city were left without water.

Severn Trent said that properties in the WR5 postcode area of Worcester, which includes Kempsey and Broomhall, had either no water supply or were experiencing water pressure problems on Monday morning (October 14) due to the burst pipe.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: "Our teams are currently on site working to repair a burst pipe near the Elbury Hill area of Worcester.

"We would like to apologise to the small number of households who experienced water supply or pressure issues.

"Everyone has been back on supply since 8.30am and we are working to complete repairs as quickly as possible."

Severn Trent later confirmed the burst pipe occurred near the WR5 1RA postcode near Nunnery Wood Sports Complex.

The company initially said repairs to the burst pipe would be completed by 10am, however repair works continued into the afternoon.

Heavy traffic congestion affected London Road and the city centre after temporary traffic lights were set up on the former to give Severn Trent access.

Three of the water company's vehicles were parked alongside London Road between its junction with Foxwell Street and the Tesco Express petrol station.

Temporary traffic signals installed between these points meant that queues of traffic were seen along London Road and in nearby Wyld's Lane, with a backlog of vehicles seen leading into the city centre and the Deansway.

Traffic delays were also felt on the A38 and Bath Road heading toward the city centre.

Temporary traffic lights remained in place on London Road into the afternoon as work continued.

Whilst a team from Severn Trent worked to repair a burst water pipe, another team on London Road were in position to "keep the water supply in place," according to one of their workers on-site.

Waitrose supermarket in London Road was amongst the properties that experienced water supply problems early in the morning.

A staff member said that disruption was minimal though, with the on-site café operating as normal due to back-up reserves of water and the opening of the supermarket's meat and fish counter only delayed for a short time.

Waitrose's water supply had returned by 8.30am.
