CRUCIAL resurfacing work to solve 'really dangerous issues on a Powick road has finally begun.

Work to resurface Sparrowhall Lane, near a recently built housing development, is due to be carried out this week after Worcestershire County Council's Highways department stepped in.

But, despite being pleased with the work, Cllr Tom Wells said he is perplexed as to why council taxpayers have had to fork out for work that should have been completed by Piper Homes.

A full road closure will be in place during the work, which began at 7am on Monday, September 9 and will be completed at 4.35pm on Friday, September 13.

Piper Homes' outline application for up to 39 homes, 40 per cent affordable, on land at Sparrowhall Lane, was approved by Malvern Hills District Council in January 2022.

Cllr Wells, county councillor for Powick as well as Malvern Hills District Council leader, said that as a condition of this development, the state of Sparrowhall Lane should have been dealt with by Piper Homes.

However, Piper Homes went into administration back in June, leaving the situation up in the air.

As a result, the surface of Sparrowhall Lane has been blighted by potholes and cracks, leaving to complaints from residents living nearby.

Cllr Wells told the Gazette he had been campaigning for this resurfacing for the best part of a year, adding in the spring he had been told by Piper Homes it would conduct the resurfacing.

He added: "Having visited the site recently it is clear to me the condition of the surface presents a real danger to road users, particularly cyclists and walkers.

"After it became clear Piper Homes was unable to carry out the work, it seemed like nobody would pick up responsibility.

"This is essential work and I am delighted that highways have picked this up, but the question remains as to why the council tax payers money has had to be used when this should have been done by Piper Homes."

Piper Homes were unavailable for comment.
