The occasion was marked by a medal presentation, where Maddrell was given the prestigious BCA Medal of Honour for Services to Community (BCAc).

Winners of the award are allowed to use the post-nominals BCAc, in honour of their achievements.

Ms Maddrell's hard work began as soon as refugees started coming into the UK, fleeing from the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

She took it upon herself to find secure homes for these people, even before local authorities and charities stepped in.

Ms Maddrell found homes for a large number of women, children and elderly citizens using her network of contacts.

To assist the refugees arriving in the UK, she set up a WhatsApp group so people could communicate and ask questions ahead of arrival.

She did so with the aim of reducing the "fear factor", with the over 100 group members swapping notes on facilities, transport and resources in the area,

Her work didn't stop at housing the refugees.

Despite a cancer diagnosis, Ms Maddrell set up community gatherings, a Saturday night social for guests, and has celebrated events including Ukrainian Independence Day, Christmas, where she wrapped 109 presents for the children, and New Year.

Corie Eldred, head of retail operations from BCA Partners One Stop, who presented Maddrell with her medal, said: "The work Alison tirelessly puts in to ensure refugees are supported and have a safe place to live is incredible.

"Huge congratulations to Alison, a well-deserved recognition."

The ceremony was a glamourous affair, hosted by TV presenter Matt Allwright.

Guests included BCA patrons Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, and The Rt Hon Lord Dholakia.

Following the ceremony, medallists were given a tour of Westminster, and a certificate presentation at another renowned venue in the area.
