MALVERN’S new pump track has finally reached the planning stage.

The much-anticipated project will see a bike pump track built next to the Adam Lee play area in Poolbrook, as long as it gets planning approval from the district council.

Malvern Town Council is behind the plans and says getting to this point has been a long time coming.

Town clerk Linda Blake said: “We are really pleased to put in the planning application - a lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes to get us to this point.

“When we carried out a public consultation, 83 percent of people supported the idea of a pump track located at the Adam Lee site, so the town council has been really keen to make it happen.

“We selected our preferred contractor last year and we will get started as soon as we get planning approval.”

The clerk said the bulk of the funding - some £86,000 - is coming from Section 106 funding.

This is money paid by developers that is used for community infrastructure projects. In this case it was paid to the planning authority, Malvern Hills District Council, which gave the town council permission to use it for the pump track project.

“The area around the land has several large housing developments, so it’s nice we can use the money from developers to provide something that people really want,” said Mrs Blake.

“A pump track is something that’s currently missing in Malvern - and we’re not stopping there.

“We are planning to add to the existing play area and create a new wetland area on the other side of the land. The pump track is just the first stage.”

According to planning documents, the undulating asphalt track will measure 70 metres by 20 metres.

“The track will be publicly accessible to the surrounding community and town,” the council says in its planning statement.

“The proposal would not result in the loss an existing green space, but deliver an alternative recreational use for the area.”
