COMMUTERS in Malvern were left facing a 'nightmare' journey after two neighbouring roads were closed off.

Both Leigh Sinton Road and Stocks Lane have been closed off by Severn Trent Water this week to conduct vital work.

Commuters accused Worcestershire County Council of 'poor planning' after the two nearby roads were closed at the same time.

However, the authority said that an emergency closure was required for Stocks Lane, with a sewer rising main causing concern.

Severn Trent has also apologised for the disruption.

The Lower Interfields side of Leigh Sinton Road has been scheduled for roadworks by Severn Trent all week, with delays likely.

A diversion route had been put in place by Worcestershire County Council's highways team.

The roadworks began at 9.30am on Monday, July 8 and are scheduled to finish at 6pm on Friday, July 12.

People can usually turn onto Stocks Lane from Lower Interfields from via the A4103- however,, on Tuesday commuters realised they were both closed.

One woman said it was absolutely ridiculous all these road closures were happening at the same time.

Another said trying to do the school run, where she had to get to both Leigh and Bransford Primary School and Dyson Perrins Academy, was a nightmare.

She added the work should have been completed during the school holidays, which start less than two weeks from now.

And one concerned parent said she was worried about her ability to take her child to the Dyson Perrins Academy prom on Thursday.

Stocks Lane has since been re-opened.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience while our teams have been working in Leigh Sinton in Malvern to address a repair and provide new connections.

"We understand just how frustrating road works can be and our teams always aim to complete every job as quickly and safely as possible, and traffic management helps to keep everyone safe.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council added: “The Severn Trent works on Leigh Sinton Road are taking place under a planned closure.

"An emergency closure was required for essential works on Stocks Lane, to allow Severn Trent to repair a sewer rising main.

"These works have now been removed.”
