A HEREFORDSHIRE theatre is planning one of its most ambitious shows in its 40-year history as it prepares for Shrek the Musical.

Auditions are being held at the Conquest Theatre in Bromyard on Sunday, June 30 and Tuesday, July 2 for the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning smash hit film.

Having produced other West End hits such as Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors and Legally Blonde in recent years, the Conquest Theatre team is already looking forward to when the show opens to audiences in October.

The volunteer-run theatre, which was founded in 1980 and based in Tenbury Road since 1993, is expecting a great turnout for the auditions, which are open to everyone over the age of eight - no previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.

Directed by Lisa Legge, who is no stranger to the Conquest stage having featured in several shows and musicals over the last 10 years, Shrek the Musical will be the highlight of a packed autumn schedule.

A spokesperson for the theatre said: “Shrek the Musical is no doubt one of the most ambitious shows the Conquest has ever put on. Following the story of everyone’s favourite ogre, we’ll be bringing you all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage.

“It follows the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairytale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand - and his name is Shrek.

“The reception the Conquest has been getting for its autumn musical has been great, and tickets are now on sale. We are really excited about bringing this to life.”

Shrek the Musical runs at the Conquest Theatre on dates between Friday, October 25 and Saturday, November 2 and is suitable for all ages.
