The number of obese dogs in the Midlands has increased by 10 per cent in a single year fuelled by a diet of unhealthy foods.

Leading veterinary charity, PDSA, says it's not just our canine friends who are piling on the pounds. Every day, PDSA veterinary staff see cats, rabbits and smaller pets like hamsters with expanding waistlines.

To help the nation's pets fight the flab, PDSA today launches its fourth annual PDSA Pet Fit Club competition.

The charity believes the rise in obesity is partly due to the more varied selection of fatty and sugary treats which owners are giving their pets.

It says that in addition to munching on pet food and leftovers from our plates, animals are being allowed to develop a taste for scones, cheese, chips and crisps.

PDSA senior veterinary surgeon Sean Wensley said: "The rise in pet obesity is extremely concerning. Pets rely on us for the right amount and type of food and the right amount exercise to live happy, healthy lives. Unfortunately, owners are literally killing their pets with kindness."

PDSA is looking for eight overweight pets to take part in Pet Fit Club. Each will follow a 100-day diet and fitness programme, especially tailored by PDSA vets, to help them shift their excess inches. To apply, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/petfitclub.

"This means there is a real need for owners to help their pets lose their excess pounds. Pet Fit Club offers them the perfect opportunity to do just that, with the support and guidance of PDSA vets."

Fifty-seven per cent said they felt their pets deserved' treats because they were "one of the family" while a further five per cent admitted bribing their pets with tasty food in an attempt to guarantee good behaviour.

Over the last three years PDSA vets have helped Pet Fit Club finalists shed an incredible 120-kg or 19-stones, equivalent to the weight of a one-year-old polar bear, a Giant Panda or the former All Black star Jonah Lomu.

At the end of the programme, the pet with the most significant weight-loss that, in the opinion of the judges, has best followed their new regime, will be crowned PDSA Pet Fit Club Champ'. The Champ' will win its owner a pet-friendly' holiday, courtesy of Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire.

Entry forms are available at all PDSA PetAid hospitals and shops, by calling 01952 204748 or online at www.pdsa.org.uk/petfitclub.
