Tickets are still available for a walking challenge that showcases the Malvern Hills.

The Mayor’s Peaks Challenge takes place on Saturday, April 29 and sees participants taking on one of two walks.

A 15km walk takes you the full length of the Malvern Hills, over all 17 peaks, while a shorter 7km route takes in the main section of the hills including its highest point, the Worcestershire Beacon.

Registration for the longer walk will be in Priory Park from 8am with coaches leaving from 8.30am to take walkers to the starting point on the Bromesberrow Estate.

Those taking on the shorter walk can register from 10.15am until 11.30am before being taken to British Camp by bus.

All entrants will receive an event T-shirt and will be presented with a finishers medal by the mayor of Malvern, Cllr Nick Houghton.

The event is raising money for this year’s Mayor’s Charity, which is Guide Dogs, specifically the Malvern and Ledbury branch.

Cllr Houghton, himself a dog owner, has admitted that fundraising alongside Guide Dogs representatives has hardly been a hardship as he has been able to meet plenty of cute and capable dogs along the way.

Speaking at the annual Malvern town meeting last week, he said events like the Christmas lights switch-on projects such as the Mayor’s calendar, which featured pictures of guide dogs and their owners, had helped raise a “fantastic” amount of money for the charity.

He also said he was confident of reaching his fundraising target of £10,000, which will allow the town council to run a competition to name a guide dog puppy.

Cllr Houghton gave particular thanks to Debbie Pitts, group volunteer organiser for Guide Dogs Ledbury and Malvern, and her team.

They have been supporting the mayor in his fundraising, while publicising the work the charity does.

Mayor's charity quiz at Malvern Rugby Club

Cllr Houghton is also holding a charity quiz at Malvern Rugby Club to raise further funds.

The quiz will take place at 7.30pm on Friday, April 14 and tickets are £5 per team member (maximum five players per team).
