A pub quiz night in Malvern that started out with only three teams has grown to raise more than £15,000 for local charities in just two years.

The popular quiz that takes place every Wednesday night at the Bluebell Inn in Barnards Green not only gives punters the chance to win – but several charities too.

“The quiz started about three years ago and initially we would ask charities to contact us if they would like us to run a quiz on their behalf to raise funds for them,” quiz question master, Steve Rowan said.

“However, we decided after a while to pick a local charity and raise a specified sum of money for them and then move onto the next charity.

“I have been the quiz master from the beginning, and have always ensured that the money raised by the teams goes to local charities so that the money given stays locally and helps smaller local charities.”

When the word got out that charities were benefiting from the quiz, it led to more people wanting to take part.

Steve continued: “Over the time that the quiz has been running it has gradually grown from initially about six teams per week until now when we regularly have anything up to sixteen teams playing the quiz.

“The Bluebell provides the first prize of a £40 food voucher and gives a 20 per cent discount on food bought by teams playing in the quiz.”

In the last two years the teams have raised an incredible £15,562 going to help good causes such as West Midlands Air Ambulance, Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter, Malvern Food Bank and even a defibrillator that was fitted on the front of the pub.

Money was also raised for the Maddresfield Club, who gave up their facilities free of charge so the quiz night could continue to run after the Bluebell was closed due to the fire in June last year.

Steve said: “We are currently raising £3,000 for the Acorns Worcester Hospice and we will then start raising funds for Amaze who are helping homeless people in the area get back on their feet.

“We always endeavour to make the quiz a fun and enjoyable night out - it’s not Mastermind after all!”

The Bluebell Quiz night takes place every Wednesday at the Bluebell Inn, Barnards Green, Malvern and starts at 8pm.
