The second of two concerts to be given by the English Symphony Orchestra (ESO) and conductor Kenneth Woods in Malvern will take place on Saturday, February 25.

‘Journey to America’ presents two lyrical works by Czech composer, Antonin Dvořák: his celebrated Cello Concerto and the equally famous and well-loved Symphony No.9, both composed in New York. It forms part of their ‘Journeys and Discoveries’ season at Malvern Theatres.

The ESO is excited to welcome back internationally acclaimed cello soloist, Maja Bogdanović, following her performances of Haydn and Saint-Saens.

Bogdanović’s most recent ESO appearance saw her give the world premiere of Sawyers' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello with her husband, violinist Daniel Rowland.

The Nimbus Alliance recording of the work is being released on March 6.

“I was immediately struck by her incredible artistry”, said Kenneth Woods.

“Maja is also one of the nicest people to work with in the business and I cannot wait to hear her play the Dvořák with us in Malvern.

“As a cellist myself, I know Maja is the kind of artist who makes this music look and sound effortless.”

Before the show on February 25 at Malvern Theatres, the ESO Beginners and Intermediate Orchestras will perform their own American-themed programme conducted by James Topp at 6.15pm.

One of the most anticipated will be the BBC ‘Ten Pieces’ version of Leonard Bernstein's explosive 'Mambo' from his Symphonic Dances from 'West Side Story'.

ESO Youth Beginners and Intermediate ensembles are formed of talented students aged 6-17 from all over the UK who come together at half-terms and summer holidays.

Each year, the ESO headlines an ambitious series of concerts in Worcester, Malvern, Hereford, and across the Midlands’ region.
