A Malvern charity shop has launched a range of humorous greeting cards with the help of MP Harriett Baldwin.
Amaze, in Belle Vue Terrace, say the funny cards have caused quite a stir – with customers fascinated by the witty puns.
There’s now more than 200 cards on display in the shop featuring quips such as “I’ve decided to sell my hoover, it was just collecting dust”.
The cards are all printed in the shop and have become one of the best-selling items; priced at just £1 each.
Chris Lee, a director of Amaze, said: “When Harriett started the ball rolling for us, we had a range of about 50 cards so we invited our customers to submit ideas for more puns to help us increase the range.
“In a very short time we have been overwhelmed by the support we have had.
“Local people just walk in and tell us their ideas, the original and funny puns are immediately printed as greetings cards and put straight on the shelves.”
And before Christmas, the cards gained quite a crowd when one family visited.
Chris continued: “A family came into the shop and started looking at the cards, the dad was a bit of a comedian and started to read the cards out loud.
“Within a few minutes he had an appreciative audience of more than 20 people all standing and listening to his performance.
“He stayed for over half an hour and his efforts were so well appreciated that we had sold over 100 cards by the time he ran out of breath.”
“Among our favourite cards are – ‘a dung beetle walks into a bar and asks ‘is this stool taken’ as well as ‘time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana!’
“It is too hard to pick just one out of 200, the best thing is for people to come and have a look at them all and choose their own favourite.”
The charity helps support homeless, disadvantaged and vulnerable people get back into employment to build an independent life.
Fellow director Polly Reehal , added: “The cards are all produced in the shop by disadvantaged people, the sale of the cards helps to pay the wages of those we support – we are a not for profit social enterprise, so every penny counts.
“We are currently looking for a volunteer with a selling background to help us open up other outlets for these cards by showing them to newsagents, garages and gift shops.”
