A THUG has been given a lengthy jail sentence for attacking his wife and threatening to kill her. 

Vasko Panov appeared in the dock of Courtroom 3 at Worcester Crown Court to be sentenced for affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and making a threat to kill.

Thomas Kenning, prosecuting, said Panov went into Upton Pizza and Kebab in Old Street where his wife was working.

The prosecutor said Panov, of no fixed abode, was drunk and was making derogatory comments to her. 

"Outside the defendant began to bang his fist on the shop window," the prosecutor said. 

"While (the victim) was preparing an order the defendant went next to her and grabbed a large knife. 

"She was scared.

"He was waving the knife shouting 'do you want me to slaughter you'?"

The prosecutor said the offence was aggravated by children being there at the time, and only ended when the victim's brother arrived to disarm him.

The 50-year-old returned home to Bulgaria but later came back and moving back in with his wife, the prosecutor said.

On October 18 last year Panov returned home drunk, and assaulted his wife saying he would "slaughter and finish her".

The prosecutor described how Panov hit her a number of times and strangled the victim in a sustained attack in which the victim had dropped in and out of consciousness.

When the victim's brother and police arrived, in front of them Panov said: "I will kill you, I will burn you".

Ilana Davis, defending, said: "He is sorry for the offences he had committed. 

"His intention is to return to Bulgaria."

She added a probation service officer, who had completed a pre-sentence report on him, had judged Panov was at a "low risk" of reoffending in the future.

Sentencing him the judge, Recorder Michael Duck KC, recapped the whole case and said what happened had a "significant" impact on her.

Recorder Duck said the offences were so serious only immediate custody was the suitable sentence. 

He jailed Panov for a total of 34 months.

The case was heard on Friday, (October 28).
