MURALS across the city are starting to take form as part of a city-wide art festival.

The Worcester Paint Festival is being held this weekend, from Saturday, September 17 to Sunday, September 18.

The festival brings artists from across the UK, and local emerging artists together to celebrate creativity.

A Worcester News reporter visited the city centre today and captured some of the murals.

Crowngate Shopping Centre, Chapel Walk, and Broad Street are just some of the city centre areas where you can find some of this artwork.

Helen Haynes' mural on Broad Street had a powerful underlying message about the financial crisis the UK is facing.

She said:"My piece is an Octopus squeezing fish very tightly, and it is about the current pressures we are all under.

"We are feeling the financial pressure as well the looming energy crisis. One of the tentacles can also be seen gripping a plastic bottle which touches on plastic waste pollution as well."

A lot of murals can be found in the city centre, but some have appeared in other locations such as The Countryside Centre and the side of The Mount Pleasant Pub on London Road.

Leigh Charman has been painting a mural at The Orchard Cafe at Countryside Centre.

He said:"We were asked by Kate Cox to paint something in line with the nature and wildlife around the park.

"The message builds on a mural from last year from Rob Draper who did this same festival. his phrase was 'lose yourself' so I went with the opposite.

"I thought the message suited the area quite well with the surrounds of the park, and it is also a positive message."

Kate Cox, festival director, has been based inside Crowngate Shopping Centre answering questions from the public and helping hand out maps of the city with other organisers.

She said: "I am really pleased. It is still a bit overwhelming but it all seems to be going smoothly and we are having some lovely conversations with the public.

"I think all of our artists are happy so I am delighted."
