FLAGS were everywhere in Malvern as the townsfolk showed their patriotic spirit ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The flags must have numbered in their hundreds in Malvern, Malvern Link and other parts of the district, fluttering from flagpoles or decorating shop windows as the town showed it was cream of the Royal crop.
It was a vibrant display that proved the town was not to be outdone by its rivals when it came to marking Her Majesty's milestone.
This weekend the Queen will become the first British monarch in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.
The summer of 2022 brings not only the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, but also the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games which will be coming through Great Malvern on Friday, July 22.
Malvern Town Council’s operational staff have been 'very busy putting up flagpoles across the town', including flying Unions Jacks and St George’s Cross Flags 'so that Malvern will look at its very best'.
A spokesman for the Town Council confirmed 'there are more flags flying than ever before' and that they tried to incorporate as many parts of the town as possible. It may even be surpassed next year, organisers hope.
Linda Blake, Town Clerk said: “We have been pleased to receive good feedback on how good the town looks this year with the red, white, and blue colour of these flags being seen flying from buildings across the town.
"The Town Council’s Operations staff put up flags in Great Malvern, Barnards Green and Malvern Link every year, but in 2022 the number of flags being flown has been increased even more to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and this has certainly been noticed by both residents and visitors to the town.
"The council plans to increase this number even further next year to ensure the town looks vibrant for the summer each and every year."
The Mayor of Malvern, Cllr Nick Houghton has today (Wednesday) unveiled a new obelisk in the entranceway to Rosebank Gardens and surrounded by Queen Elizabeth II roses in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee.
On Sunday, June 5 the town council is hosting an afternoon of Jubilee Celebrations from noon until 5pm in Priory Park.
This event will be opened by the mayor and will feature a traditional brass band, vintage singer, Lindyhop dance alongside children’s entertainment and refreshments.
