A new roundabout being built near Upton-upon-Severn is beginning to take shape.

A new four-arm roundabout is being constructed to replace the current staggered junction of the A38 and A4104.

The roundabout is expected to make the notorious accident spot safer for motorists and improve journey times.

Work has so far focused on transferring thousands of tonnes of material onto the site, to create the base for the new roundabout and road alignment, as well as the installation of new drainage and kerbing.

Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for highways and transport said: “Works on site are progressing well and those that have been past the area recently will have seen how much this site has developed since works began last year.

“This major scheme just outside of Upton will make a huge difference to those using the route, especially at peak periods of the day.

Roadworks to come on A38 and A4104

“The new roundabout will reduce queuing traffic on the A38 and provide improved access to the A4104 from the A38,” added Councillor Amos.

He said the introduction of new, wider shared walkway will also enhance usage in the area for those using alternative modes of transport.

“This scheme is another example of our commitment to deliver on a key council priority of relieving congestion at the county’s busiest hotspots.”

Most of the work so far has taken place off the main public roads, but to allow the scheme to progress, roadworks will be required on both the A38 and A4104 in the coming months.

The new roundabout, a multi-million pound scheme funded by Worcestershire County Council and the Department for Transport, is scheduled to be operational this autumn.
