VISITORS are ignoring clear instructions to keep away from Gullet Quarry.

Police said they have moved 51 people away from quarry, which managers of the Malvern Hills Trust have warned is more dangerous than ever.

They say visitors to Gullet Quarry, near Malvern, face a risk of drowning, spreading Covid-19 at mass gatherings and rock slides.

The quarry has seen several deaths in recent years with two happening within a week in 2013.

In a tweet, West Mercia Police officers covering Malvern, said: “Up at Gullet Quarry this afternoon [May 24] - members of the public are still ignoring signs.

“[There has been ] 21 people over the barbed wire and approx 30 others moved on from the area.”

West Mercia Police had issued a stark warning ahead of the for the Bank Holiday weekend and said: “Do not come to Gullet Quarry swimming or climbing over the fencing, you are putting yourself and others lives at risk.”

Ledbury Town Council Mayor, Cllr Phillip Howells, said: “ We can’t warn people over the dangers at the quarry enough.

“Listen to the repeated warnings - go out and enjoy the sunshine but don’t turn your outing into a tragedy.”

The notorious beauty spot claimed the lives of Justas Juzenas, aged 22, of Ross-on-Wye and Russell O’Neill, aged 17, of Worcester who both drowned there in July 2013 within a week of each other.

The risk of cold water shock and drowning, hidden currents and unseen objects such as broken glass have been well-publicised by the Malvern Hills Trust, West Mercia Police, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Royal Life Saving Society UK.
