MALVERN United Angling Club members visited Holme Lacy for the second of their three season's outings to the ever popular river Wye on Sunday.

Fishing the Wye is a real challenge, with big chub, barbel and dace, living in fast water and deep holes, requiring strong tackle and plenty of bait.

Conditions were not ideal, with the river containing a few inches of extra water, but running clear.

Drawn at the bottom end of the stretch on the faster water was Mike Spragg, a winner last time out on the Wye. Mike set his stall out for dace, fishing a waggler float and feeding maggots, no dace appeared but after constant feeding Mike caught a nice chub of about 2 1/2lbs, several more chub to 4-8-0 followed at intervals during the day to give Mike a winning weight of 32-15-0.

Drawn just upstream was Neil Humpage, who also had to wait a long time for his waggler and maggot tactics to pay off, but he was rewarded with six nice chub to 3lb and six small barbel to 2-8-0, which tipped the scales at 20-7-0 and gave him second place on the day.

Third spot went to Richard Webster who did manage to find some dace and netted 11-0-0. Barbel man Pete Roberts again landed two of his favourite species by feeder fishing meat, giving him a weight of 9-0-0 and fourth spot.

This weekend sees the Roy Bouston Memorial contest on Sunday, this year hosted by the Hanley Castle club, you can still book a place if you are quick, by calling Mick Perks on 01684 561777.
