MORE than 60 people attended a meeting aimed at driving tourism in Upton.
The event at the Memorial Hall last week was organised by Malvern Hills District Council as part of the Better Welcome programme, a new initiative to help towns develop their tourist potential.
After presentations from the likes of Upton Blues Festival and Upton Community Pride, attendees split into groups to brainstorm ideas on how to improve the town.
Tourism and Trade Association chairman Peter Webb said at least 20 good suggestions were put forward, including having extra moorings on the River Severn to encourage more boats to stop at the town.
"It was a good, active meeting and overall very worthwhile," he said.
There will be a further meeting on Thursday, June 14, from 5pm to 9pm.
It will discuss the results of a survey of local businesses and attractions, and give more information about the Better Welcome programme.
A visitor survey will be conducted this summer, before all the information gathered is collated into an application for a £25,000 capital grant in 2008.
Malvern Hills District Council economic development officer Janet Yates said the meeting was a chance for business to influence the development of tourism.
"We want some out of the box thinking about issues such as local distinctiveness, target markets - anything which can help boost tourism and your business with it," she said.
The meeting includes a buffet meal, and there is space for 20 businesses to attend. Bookings must be made by Monday, June 11, by calling 01684 862483 or emailing janet.yates@malvern hills.gov.uk.
