A MALVERN couple spent the weekend scaling the nation's three highest mountains and raised more than £600 for charity.

Sue and Neil Gladwyn, who live in Malvern Link, started out by scaling Ben Nevis in Scotland on Saturday morning.

After descending from the Grampian peak, they were transported by minibus to the Lake District, where they climbed Scafell Peak.

And then an overnight journey took them to Wales, where they reached the top of Snowdon.

Mrs Gladwyn, aged 41, is a staff member of the finance department of Malvern Hills District Council, while Mr Gladwyn, 42, is a self-employed joiner.

She said: "It was such an amazing weekend but very challenging. We climbed 9,800 feet in total and my legs are still aching now.

"I've never done anything like it before, and I'm not sure that I would do it again, but its a great feeling to have achieved something like this."

The couple were raising money for the AVM Butterfly Charity, and West Midlands Search and Rescue (WMSAR).

Mrs Gladwyn said: "The AVM Butterfly Charity is close to my heart because my step daughter has been affected by an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), a defect of the circulatory system.

"She struggles every day with simple things we take for granted such as standing and walking, and more funding is much needed for research into theses defects.

“My husband also took on the challenge with me, and he volunteers for WMSAR. They are a group of everyday people who give up their free time to train and provide support to the emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and they rely fully on donations from the public.”

MHDC leader Phil Grove said: “We are very proud of what Sue has achieved in just 24 hours, and delighted with the vital funds that have been raised for such important causes.”
